Understanding the Different Types of Acne
Many people think acne is an issue that only impacts the young and oily-skinned. Fact is, acne can be caused by several issues, and not all acne is the same.
Big, white-headed zits are only one part of the problem, and you might experience other skin issues like ingrown hairs, blackheads, and inflammatory acne periodically.
At Orange Coast Dermatology in Rancho Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo, California, our team of expert dermatologists can correctly diagnose your acne and prescribe the correct form of treatment.
Acne 101
Before exploring the types of acne, it’s important to understand why acne occurs. Many factors can lead to acne, which is why there are so many kinds. Common causes of acne include:
- Bacteria (inflammation)
- Excess oil, or sebum
- Trapped dirt
- Dead skin cells
- Ingrown hairs
- Hormones
While hormonal changes during puberty often lead to a spike in acne breakouts, many adults struggle with skin problems well into adulthood. It’s completely normal and understanding your skin type, and establishing a healthy skincare routine can help.
Types of Acne
There are two primary types of acne:
- Inflammatory acne, which is swollen, red, and painful
- Non-inflammatory acne, which is often superficial and doesn’t cause swelling
Non-inflammatory acne often consists of whiteheads and blackheads. Blackheads occur when the pore becomes clogged and stays open, while whiteheads close over and form a small bump. It’s important you don’t irritate non-inflammatory acne too much, or it can become inflamed and lead to more skin problems.
Inflammatory acne is often more noticeable and difficult to deal with. Clogged pores play a part in inflammatory acne, but bacteria can cause your immune system to react negatively, leading to painful sores and swelling.
Common types of inflammatory acne include
- Pustules
- Papules
- Nodules
- Cysts
Inflammatory acne is more likely to cause damage and scarring to your skin.
Treating different types of acne
Acne treatment depends on the type, your unique skin, and the causes. Topical ointments, a customized skin care routine, and oral medications can treat acne and prevent further breakouts.
Our team can also teach you how to minimize scarring when acne does occur, so you don’t have to live with the marks and scars forever. If you do experience acne scarring, we can recommend treatments to reduce their appearance.
